Trip Report by Mel & Karen Ray
Lake Como, Lezzeno => Verona ~90 miles
Took our time getting packed ... enjoyed last breakfast at hotel and headed out of the mountains and on to Verona ... founded over 2,000 years ago ... an important location over the ages for commerce and military.
With much assistance from NUVI, we found our tiny hotel located on the city's main plaza ... got the bags to the room ... telephone booth size elevator (but I'm not complaining).
Then stepped outside on the Plaza to see the "Arena" ... a structure like the well known Rome Coliseum ... built before the Coliseum ... still in good shape (considering it's age) ... seating for 16,000 ... now accommodates their summer opera series ... over the years saw many uses ... originally gladiators fought wild beasts ... other uses include soccer games, large concerts, circus, and even Buffalo Bill's traveling show gave several performances.
We were pleased to learn the season finale Romeo & Giulietta opera playing in the Arena tonight !!!! ... the Hotel desk assisted us with purchasing tickets ... seats high-up but excellent view ... temp dropped into the low 50s so the Hotel provided seat pads and blankets (sat on marble bench) ... didn't understand a word but followed the plot quite well ... dancing & music excellent (terrific sound system) ... a rare treat to enjoy this performance.
Opera was nationally televised ... we were surprised at the amount of TV cameras & technology used for the broadcast. The opera started 9:15 PM ... performance lasted for 3+ hours!
Tired from the drive & excitement of the evening we were very pleased with the day.
