On market days, start by exploring the stands that sets up near the harbor. You will find many wonderful handcrafted items, and delicious homegrown produce. Unlike many markets, there are very few "made in China" mass market items. Best of all you can sample local dishes, notably reindeer meatballs, and fried fish of all kinds.
From the harbor catch a 15 minute ferry ride to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO world heritage site. This fortress is open to visitors from 6am till 2am in the summer. There is no admission to the fortress, but each museum on the island has a separate admission. Several paid ferries take visitors to the island. Here is information on finding the ferry departure points.
Even a stroll along the harbor front provides for enjoyable sightseeing. A pleasant and walkable downtown, check the public transportation schedules, and allow ample time to return to your ship.
